Purpose of the site

NACHMAN is a site for learning and for finding sources in the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and Rabbi Nathan of Nemirov. You can read books on it, search, move between topics and ask a question, and everywhere you can see which book and which passage a text comes from.

No rulings or professional advice

The content of the site is for learning and information only. It is not:

  • a halachic ruling;
  • medical advice;
  • mental health advice or treatment;
  • legal or financial advice.

For a halachic question, consult a rabbi. For a medical, mental health, legal or financial matter, consult a qualified professional. Anyone in distress or in danger should contact a professional or emergency services right away.

Ask the Sources

  • The system finds passages in the site's library of sources and shows them, each with its book and its place in the book.
  • To select and phrase its answer, the system may use automated processing, including a computer language model.
  • The system can make mistakes, miss a relevant source, or show a passage that does not fit the question.
  • The linked source is what matters. It is worth opening it and reading it in its context.
  • An automatically generated explanation is not a source in itself, and it is not the words of Rabbi Nachman or Rabbi Nathan.

Accuracy and availability

We do our best to make the texts accurate and to link every statement to its source. Even so:

  • There may be errors in a text, in how it was entered, or in a link.
  • Some books were entered only in part; the extent of each book is listed on the sources page.
  • Pages, addresses and features of the site may change.
  • The site may be unavailable from time to time.

Found an error? We would be glad to hear about it on the contact page.

Copyright

The site has four different layers, and each has its own status:

  1. The historical works themselves. The writings of Rabbi Nachman and Rabbi Nathan are old works. The site does not own them and makes no claim to own them.
  2. Transcriptions and digital editions prepared by others. Some texts are shown from a transcription or edition prepared by someone else. Any rights in this layer remain with their lawful owners. For some editions the rights status has not yet been determined, and this is stated explicitly.
  3. The site's original content. Topic pages, articles, explanations, and the selection and arrangement of sources were written and edited for the site.
  4. The site's code, design and branding.

The full details, book by book (which edition each text was taken from, how much of it was entered, and what is and is not yet known about the rights in each layer), are on the sources and rights page.

Permitted use

  • You may browse, read and learn on the site for personal, non-commercial use.
  • You may link to any page on the site and share links.
  • Copying, distributing or commercially using the texts themselves is subject to the rights status of the edition they come from, as listed on the sources page. These terms do not grant permission to reuse a text whose rights status has not been determined.
  • To use the site's original content beyond a short quotation with a link, please contact us first.

The site sometimes links to other people's sites and services, and some of its own services rely on outside providers. Each of them has its own terms of use and privacy policy, and the site has no control over them. For the information the site itself keeps, see the privacy policy.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated from time to time, for example when a new feature is added to the site. The current version will always appear on this page, with the date of the last update at the top.
