שבחי הר״ן · חלק ראשון · אות ד׳

גם בימי קטנותו התחיל להתמיד מאד מאד בלמודו, והיה משלם למלמד מכיסו שלשה גדולים בעד כל דף גמרא שהיה לומד עמו, מלבד השכר־למוד שהיה אביו משלם למלמד היה הוא בעצמו, זכרונו לברכה; נותן למלמד משלו שלשה גדולים בעד כל דף ודף, כדי שהמלמד יכריח עצמו ללמד עמו הרבה דפין גמרא בכל יום. וכן היה – שהיה המלמד לומד עמו כמה וכמה דפין בכל יום ויום והוא היה משלם לו כנ"ל ג' גדולים בעד כל דף ודף מלבד שאר הלמוד.
